Capcom announced in July that it was reviving the Mega Man series on the current generation of consoles... except it would look like a game on the original generation of consoles.
Mega Man 9, which will hit Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 via their respective download services in September, is a direct addition to the series, borrowing graphics and gameplay from the 8-bit games for the original NES.
The decision to kick things old school has set the gaming community a-buzz. In addition to allowing for the use of original NES controllers (via an adapter), Mega Man 9 will also feature screen flicker and bugs, just like it's 1987. Blowing in the game to get it to work is optional.
Capcom has also hinted that the enthusiasm shown for the series' reboot already has them mulling over future retro-styled Mega Man releases. Perhaps other publishers will latch on to this idea of making old new again and revive other classic 8-bit and 16-bit franchises.
Mega Man 9, along with Mega Man 1 and 2, will be release on WiiWare, PSN and XBLA in September.
