Something in the 'Air'

If you haven't seen it by now, Apple has introduced the MacBook Air - an ultra-thin notebook, or should I say 'envelope', computer. The unit was announced yesterday, as a part of Steve Job's keynote address at the annual MacWorld Expo.

As per usual, I caught updates from the presentation live on the web. While these types of announcements have introduced the world to some revolutionary products - such as the many versions of the iMac, the iPhone and, of course, every new iPod - this announcement brought little excitement.
Here's a quick run-down, coupled with my thoughts:

MacBook Air
Apple's fabled ultra-slim is just that, and in more than one respect. Physically (and esthetically) it's stunning - thinner than your index finger, Apple boasts that the unit will slide smoothly into a manila envelope. The 13.3" LCD screen looks incredible, even in the pictures. And where it's thin in profile, it's also thin on features and computing power.

The processor is average, the 2GB of ram is nice - but not expandable, it has but one USB port and no disc drive. While it's price (and very-expensive up-grade options) and it's lack of features will keep the average consumer away, it's form factor, multitouch track pad and it's "remote disc" capabilities will no doubt move notebook technology forward...

Time Capsule
This new back-up technology will be great for the average user. The most exciting thing about this announcement is the retooled AirPort Extreme wireless router, which now includes a built-in hard drive.

AppleTV Take 2/iTunes Movie Rentals
It'll be interesting to see how this pans out... will Apple be able to finally get more AppleTV's into people's living rooms? Will iTunes rentals be able to hang with Netflix?

iPhone/iPod Touch updates
Adding features to two already-stellar, widely-popular devices... always a good idea. Click here to see 'em.

So that's that... mattress man.
